In the 1960’s, to meet the demands of the
Chinese PLA for an anti-tank battle weapon, the Chinese stared conducting
research for a powerful self-propelled recoilless rifle. After 10 years of
designing, experimenting and testing, a new type of self-propelled 105mm
recoilless rifle was completed in 1975 then produced and supplied to the PLA
Army. The chassis of the rifle was modified from a Chinese-made BJ212 Jeep
which had good all-terrain capability in order to insure firing precision. At a
distance of 1000m, the armour-piercing projectile and high explosive shell can
effectively pirece and destroy medium size tanks or light fortifications. As a
light but powerful moving gun, this 105mm self-propelled recoilless rifle was
widely used in the PLA army primarily by the shock brigades teams.
